Timespinner is an action-adventure platformer developed by Lunar Ray Games and published by Chucklefish. The game features retro pixel graphics with rich visuals and an interesting plot. Players battle against an evil empire with their time-bending powers.

A Very Fine 2D Platformer

Timespinner takes its inspiration from classic 90s video games like Super Mario Bros, Kirby, Metroid, Megaman, Ghost and Goblins, Sonic the Hedgehog and Castlevania have impressive visuals, deep lore, interesting characters, and memorable battles. These classic games have influenced thousands of indie games. Timespinner is part of that generation who grew with those games. The game is about timekeeper Lunais on her quest for revenge. The Lachiem Empire launched an invasion and her family was murdered. Lunais got transported to the future as the ancient Timespinner apparatus got destroyed in the midst of chaos. Stranded in an unfamiliar place and time, Lunais has to use her powers to correct the course of history, defy fate and stop the Lachiem Empire.

The game features vast and interconnected worlds. Each environment has a well-designed and very detailed pixel art. Musician Jeff Ball provided the Gothic soundtrack reminiscent of PS1 games. Players will be drawn to the game’s story-rich universe. The future world is depicted as dilapidated and barren while the past world looked lush and lively. Lunais can manipulate time as a time-bender. She can evade enemies, create makeshift platforms and solve time-constraint puzzles. Her basic attack is using blades. Players can collect elemental Magic Orbs and combine them to fend off enemies. The elemental weapons can be found everywhere and it can be upgraded by further using them.

There are also friendly Familiars roaming around the world. Players can befriend and train them as allies. They must expect very challenging boss battles where their dexterity, skills, and timing will be put to the test. Like every classic platforming game, players can discover hidden areas and treasures. They have to find secret walls and solve platforming puzzles that might take some time to complete. The game includes co-op mode where the second player controls the Familiar. Players can opt for keyboard or gamepad controls.

Timespinner is a charming game because of the art style, atmosphere, and characters. The game has enjoyable puzzles, secrets, and boss fights. It capitalizes the nostalgia factor of 2D platformers but presenting it with fresh ideas.
